Six Tips for Accident and Disaster Preparedness

Six Tips for Summer Accident and Disaster Preparedness

The days are growing longer and warmer on the Atlantic coast. That means tourism season – and hurricane season – are almost upon us. Summer 2022 is predicted to be record breaking both in terms of travel and significant weather events. Whether you are concerned about slips and falls or a Category 5 storm, below are six tips to help mitigate potential harm to your business, your employees, and your customers when disaster strikes:

Assess your risks. First, identify the potential risks and hazards specific to your business. Think about your location, layout, operations, and clientele. For example, is your building in a flood zone? Do you stock food subject to spoilage? Is your establishment kid-friendly? Considering your business’s particular attributes will go a long way in helping you prepare for any accidents that may occur.

Make a plan. Next, create written policies and procedures tailored to the risks and hazards identified. Stress caused by emergency situations can affect decision making and judgment. Having a written plan can dramatically reduce chaos and confusion, saving property, equipment, and lives. Periodically review the policies with your employees, and revise them if necessary.

Train your employees. Employees must be familiar with and trained regularly on the policies and procedures in place. Depending on the type of risk involved, it may be beneficial to run simulations or drills. Every employee should know their roles and responsibilities in a time of crisis.

Document, document, document. Proper recordkeeping is essential to risk management. Maintain records of employee training. Record incidents when they occur so you can appropriately evaluate your policies and decide if they need updating. Consider taking photographs and/or videos of your establishment so you are prepared if you need to file an insurance claim.

Safeguard information. It is vital to ensure sensitive business records and customer information stay protected. With cybersecurity threats on the rise, make sure your technology is up to date. Use different passwords for different accounts. Instruct your employees not to open suspicious emails or attachments. Separate your public Wi-Fi network from the business Wi-Fi. Enlist the help of an IT professional if needed. As your SERVPRO Franchise Professional about our Emergency Ready Profile program (“ERP”). A free assessment of your property designed to serve as a quick reference of important building and contact information. It provides the critical information needed to begin mitigation and recovery services. It's the best way to be "Ready for whatever happens."

Check your insurance. Confirm you have proper insurance coverage. Commercial property insurance can cover damage to your building and its contents due to a fire or storm. Flood insurance can cover losses caused by flooding. Liability insurance can protect you if an allegation is made against you by an injured patron. Are your employees covered by workers’ compensation insurance if they are injured on the job? Cyber insurance can also help protect you in the event of a cyberattack.

The above is by no means a complete list of everything that you can do to prepare for an accident or disaster; however, considering these steps can give you a start for deciding what your business needs and help prevent further loss or injury in the event of a disaster.

SERVPRO IICRC certified techs are trained in all phases of fire damage restoration. 24/7 365 days a year, we are here for you.

SERVPRO Has Well Trained Technicians Who Perform Fire Restoration in Haddon Heights

Fire is one of the disasters that are destructive and have an immediate impact on a building. Fire damage, soot, odor, and smoke residues that remain in your home and its contents can overwhelm you. SERVPRO is a leading provider of fire restoration services. We can respond to your fire emergency to secure your property and recover as well as restore cherished contents. We handle the restoration prices with a focus on quality, care, and speed.

To perform fire restoration in your Haddon Heights residence, we can assess the extent of the smoke, fire, and water damage. Our SERVPRO technicians can then secure the site to prevent additional destruction by boarding up damaged roofs, doors, and windows. What if there is water from firefighting efforts, we can remove it and dry the affected areas.

Fire damage requires different removal methods. Our team can identify the kind of smoke damage, including dry smoke, oil smoke, wet smoke, or protein smoke. We then use the most suitable cleaning equipment available for flooring, walls, and furnishings. We can remove smoke from any area, including closets, crawl spaces, plumbing systems, and HVAC systems. SERVPRO’s fire restoration services may include:

  • Removing smoke particles
  • Removing soot char
  • Removing odors
  • Surface sanitization
  • Structural repair
  • Cleaning hard and soft contents

Our SERVPRO technicians use various methods to eliminate residues from surfaces based on the surfaces we are cleaning. We can wet clean or dry clean specific surfaces. Wet cleaning involves using water-based cleaning products, while dry cleaning is ideal for surfaces that can get ruined by water-based products. We can also use ultrasonic cleaning to remove residues from a wide range of hard contents damaged by fire. To recover soft items, we can use the Esporta wash system. It is an eco-friendly and patented washing system that deep cleans sanitizes, and deodorizes soft contents to restore them to their pre-fire damage condition.

If you need fire restoration services, call a reputed restorer like SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees. Our hotline is (856) 566-3388.

Our SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees team can help with cleaning and mold remediation solutions for any circumstances that threaten homes and businesses in the area.

Treating Mold in Hosting Materials

  • Sanding
  • Media blasting

Overcoming Environmental Obstacles for Returning to Pre-Mold Conditions

Circulating mold spores exist in nearly every environment, but when specific conditions persist in the house, these microbes become a concentrated hazard. Airborne threats like these, along with secondary effects from mold development like harsh odors, must get resolved as soon as possible to avoid possible health effects or greater damage. HEPA air scrubbers can often do the job.

Correcting the Mistakes of the Competition

There have been multiple circumstances where our SERVPRO team has been notified of a hazardous situation that was not fully resolved. The first time remediation took place. Without the thorough pre and post-work inspections and testing our team performs, possible lingering mold and microbial threats could get missed and become greater concerns after a short while.

Choosing the right mold remediation provider is as simple as contacting our SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees team. We have experienced professionals capable of identifying issues and resolving problems in a mold-damaged residence to make it “Like it never even happened.” Call us today at (856) 566-3388.

Common Emergency Services for Mitigating Water Damage in Haddon Heights Homes

9/13/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO IICRC certified technicians are ready at a moment's notice for all the water damage restoration services needed for your home.

Initial actions can have the greatest impact on restoration for Haddon Heights properties.

The mitigation process is not universal, though several of its elements for water damage might overlap and be useful in many properties. Because these conditions in your home can spread and worsen so quickly, the mitigation stages need to get started as soon as possible by competent professionals like our SERVPRO team to help. Some of the key areas we can help with this include:

  • Water removal
  • Content cleaning and management
  • Physical inspections and repairs

Water Removal Services for Pooling Threats

Water removal services target the standing water throughout several areas to begin water mitigation for Haddon Heights homes. With floorings like hardwoods and tiles common to area properties, squeegee wands, wet vacuums, and submersible pumps can all be vital tools to help the process along. Removing standing water can continue to prevent unnecessary tear-out and reconstruction of building materials.

Content Relocation and Cleaning

Because you have personal belongings in nearly every area of your home, cataloging damage and relocating these items to a safe space in your house can often be enough to protect them from irreparable harm. When on-site cleaning and relocation are not feasible, we can pack these belongings to our nearby SERVPRO facility for focused cleaning and safe storage.

Damage Inspections and Material Integrity

The initial inspection of the grounds can reveal much about the work that needs to be done. During this evaluation, structural elements are carefully examined for defects and damages that could hinder the restoration process. Likewise, installed building materials are assessed for their structural integrity against trapped water and saturation. Moisture pockets can be identified with:

  • Moisture meters
  • Thermal imagery
  • Hygrometers

Despite the intensity and stresses of water damage incidents, our SERVPRO of the Haddon Heights / Voorhees team can help with early mitigation solutions. Give us a call today at (856) 566-3388.

Mold Removal Services for My Crawlspace?

3/8/2021 (Permalink)

Mold will spread like wild fire within 24 to 48 hours. SERVPRO techs are trained and experienced with mold remediation.

SERVPRO Mold Removal Services Are Perfect For Your Voorhees Home!

More people are working from home all over the country and therefore tend to have a little more free time than usual. Some choose to use this free time to deep-clean their homes. Picture cleaning out your crawl space and finding mold colonies inside.

The best thing you can do for your home after such a discovery is to call for professional and local Voorhees mold removal services. Here at SERVPRO, we can walk you through every step of the way. Once inside your home, our technicians can focus on priming your crawlspace for remediation by:

  • Closing all vents in the nearby vicinities to reduce the chance of active spores traveling elsewhere in your home
  • Using polyethylene sheeting to quarantine the mold colony
  • Suiting up in protective equipment

Our technicians take your safety seriously, as well as their own. Mold can cause health effects, so we are always careful to ensure that airborne travel is less likely. We can continue the remediation by:

  • Scraping any visible colonies away from non-porous surfaces
  • Making cuts to impacted drywall to prevent regrowth
  • Using disinfectant to help kill any active spores
  • Relying on air scrubbers to help catch airborne particles

If your home requires mold damage remediation, don't wait. Speak with SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees by calling (856) 485-6971. No matter the damage, we're here for you.

How Does SERVPRO Handle Smokewebs During Fire Restoration in Voorhees?

2/12/2021 (Permalink)

Dealing with the aftermath of a fire can be overwhelming. Contact SERVPRO and we'll be there for you during the entire process.

Fire Restoration Can Help Voorhees Properties Recover After Fire Damage

After a fire happens within a structure, it is not uncommon to find multiple black cobweb-like formations located on the ceiling up around the room's corners. Removing these can be tricky for a novice and lead to further damage if done incorrectly.

When SERVPRO handles the fire restoration services for Voorhees properties, the techs see smoke webs regularly. The webs are not cobwebs but rather a result of the ionization process that occurs when synthetic materials burn, such as

  • Plastics
  • Rubber items
  • Polymer-containing articles

The charged smoke particles rise and get attracted to the ceiling, particularly in rooms' corner areas, leaving a web-like formation. Because these are wet smoke, they cannot get simply lifted away and require a cleaning agent with a solvent base to release the grip on the wall or ceiling. This type of smoke damage is also highly pungent. It often creates the need for odor control treatments to eliminate the odor.

SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees at (856) 566-3388 has the equipment and experience to handle any size fire restoration needed in local Voorhees properties.

We take pride in our community's past, present and future. We are always on call for your emergency restoration needs.

SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees Provides Emergency-Response Service at (856) 566-3388

Voorhees is a Camden County community of over 29,000 citizens as of 2010 census data. This community was first established in the 19th century and is named after the governor that authorized its incorporation, Foster McGowan Voorhees. The name Voorhees comes from the Dutch “voor,” or “in front of,” and “Hees,” a village in Holland near Ruinen in Drenthe. Nearby Gibbsboro was incorporated from parts of Voorhees Township in 1924.

Voorhees is home to a slew of notable athletes, academics, and artists, including:

  • Olympic Games and World Rowing Championships gold medalist Laurie Schmetterling
  • Philologist Leonard Neidorf, a leading authority on Beowulf, among other pieces of literature written in Old English and Middle English
  • Actress Julia Udine, who played Christine Daaé in a North American tour of the acclaimed musical Phantom of the Opera
  • Former Green Bay Packers linebacker Jeremy Thompson
  • Josh and Zac Farro, former guitarist and drummer of the band Paramore, respectively

A Brief History of Voorhees Township

Before establishing colonial settlements in the area, what would eventually be known as Voorhees in 1899 was originally home to the Algonquian Lenni-Lenape Nation. Indigenous peoples have inhabited the New Jersey area for at least 10,000 years, according to archaeological findings. The Lenni-Lenape were largely nomadic farmers, hunters, and traders who moved to the Atlantic coast during the summer months. One of the paths the Lenni-Lenape preferred for their travels was so well-worn that it eventually became a stagecoach stop.

Voorhees was incorporated from part of Waterford Township, established by a royal charter in 1695 and named after a town of the same name in Ireland. Today, Waterford has less than half the population of Voorhees and surrounding communities. Its centuries-long legacy has created a tight-knit network of New Jersey towns in the Delaware River Valley.

Getting to Know Voorhees Township

Voorhees Township residents have many recreation options available to them in both the town itself and nearby locales like Somerdale, Evesham, and Lindenwold.

Attractions and Activities in the Area

Voorhees Township also has a multitude of parks in the area for locals and tourists alike to visit. According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Parks and Forestry, several state parks in the area, including Voorhees and Parvin State Parks, were hubs for Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Depression-era job program, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). CCC workers built park trails, shelters, and even picnic sites that persist to this day.

  • Family-friendly attractions include Diggerland USA, a theme park with a construction motif, the Garden State Discovery Museum, and Sahara Sam’s Oasis Outdoor Waterpark.
  • The Cooper River and Stafford Woods Trail are quality stops for nature enthusiasts.

Health and fitness lovers can find a multitude of activities related to their interests in and around Voorhees, including:

  • Hot yoga courses
  • Ax throwing
  • Indoor rock climbing

The Voorhees Town Center

In Voorhees, the central shopping mall is transitioning to a town center to accommodate more local commerce at the corner of Somerdale Road and Burnt Mill Road. The Voorhees Town Center also hosts events regularly to bring the community together in supporting local businesses. This well-rounded shopping experience covers everything from restaurants and breweries to health and fitness.

Neighborhoods in Voorhees

Suburbs in and around the Voorhees area include Echelon, Lost Tree, Woodcrest Acres, Alluvium, and Coffins Corner. On top of the quality school system and family-friendly activities, this town is also a desirable location due to its proximity to Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Several neighborhoods in town feature a blend of suburban peace and quiet with an abundance of natural features. Communities like Sturbridge Lakes have man-made lakes with easily accessible beaches. Potential new residents looking for a more central location might have more interest in what Alluvium has to offer. Modern architecture enthusiasts are sure to find what they are looking for in Beagle Club, which is packed with modern-style mansion developments with well-manicured landscaping.

SERVPRO Can Remove a Sewage Problem from Your Voorhees Home and Make It Safe for Your Family

How Sewage Contaminates the Bathroom of Your Voorhees Home

Much like substantial water damage, sewage threats to your Voorhees home can compromise the structural integrity of nearly every surface exposed for prolonged periods. In addition to the destruction that saturation can allow, biohazardous situations like this also present the immediate threats of bacteria, pathogens, and other harmful microorganisms.

Addressing these concerns must happen quickly after a sewage backup biohazard in Voorhees homes. One of the most significant hazards that exist after an emergency like this is underestimating the threat. Severe contamination is imminent with raw sewage backing up through toilets or floor drains, and this can cause health effects for those exposed. Our SERVPRO professionals have intensive training through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to thoroughly and safely address these hazards as they exist in a residence.

Immediate Threats

As briefly mentioned, contaminants and bacteria are among the most pressing threats. While surface water presents risks of its own for exposed materials sensitive to saturation like wallboard and wood trim, the circulating germs and bacteria can lead to illness and other health effects.

After a Day of Exposure

While the threat of contamination and the spread of these volatile microorganisms and bacteria can continue, after a day, there is an increased risk of structural compromise as well. While much of the affected materials must get removed to reduce the severity of health threats in the house, when our SERVPRO professionals begin mitigation, more than a day of exposure makes the salvaging of outer lying, uncontaminated materials a challenge.

Long-Term Concerns

Even with the removal of structural elements and fixtures like shelving, vanities, and wallboard, water can continue to migrate and affect new materials and surfaces. We strive to protect frameworks like studs and joists, so we can clear out construction materials around these bones of your house and thoroughly clean the wood with biocides, disinfectants, and antimicrobial agents.

Water damage from a sewage backup is an emergency that should not get underestimated. Trust in the fast response and the training of our SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees recovery specialists to help. Give us a call today at (856) 566-3388.

What Is Fire Damage Remediation in Voorhees and How Does It Work?

1/31/2020 (Permalink)

Regardless whether your home is cluttered or not, fire damage can be quite overwhelming. Contact SERVPRO for effective fire damage remediation.

Hoarding Situation Causes Fire Damage in Voorhees Home

When a house crosses the line from merely cluttered to hoarding, fire damage is a big concern. Items tossed on top of each other can lead to a large-scale fire loss from a simple spark or overheated plug.

A basement in Voorhees received fire damage from items stacked nearly to the ceiling. Typically when firefighters fight a fire, they pull items into the center of the room and douse them heavily with eater. They continue doing this until there is no danger of things reigniting. In this case, due to the sheer amount of stuff in the basement, the loss to items was significant.

Why SERVPRO

The technicians at SERVPRO not only have extensive training for handling all types of loss, but they also approach each job-site with compassion and professionalism. Using their advanced equipment, they can clean and restore items saving homeowners the cost of replacement.

Demo and Removal Required

Due to the amount of damage in the basement, SERVPRO technicians needed to remove most of the charred items and damaged walls and flooring. The wood paneling on the walls of the basement had a significant amount. Although the flooring did not receive direct damage from the fire, years of neglect made it un-restorable from a mild amount of water damage, and it required removal and disposal.

Prepping the Property for Repairs

Before any reconstruction occurs, the technicians ensured that the premises were clean and odor-free through the use of their cleaning agents and equipment to eradicate odors.

Rebuilding and New Beginnings

The homeowner turned this bad situation into a positive outcome by deciding to start fresh. SERVPRO offered our reconstruction services with our general contractor license HIC #13VH01276600 and rebuilt the basement to make it like new for the homeowner, with new flooring, walls repaired, and painted.

SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees at (856) 566-3388 has emergency response team members available 24/7 to clean up, restore and rebuild homes with fire damage of any size. Their advanced equipment and methods make the loss "Like it never even happened."

How Professionals Safely Remove Fire Debris in Voorhees Homes

1/28/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO begins restoration by safely removing fire debris.

Benefits of Fire Debris Removal for Voorhees Homes

After a fire loss incident, burned remnants of contents and construction materials can form heaps on the floor of your Voorhees home. Debris after a disaster like this can pose several hazards for those exposed and can be the first significant obstacle in restoring your home to its preloss condition. Most mitigation tasks cannot start until debris removal has completed, making it an integral part of the work that our fire restoration technicians perform for customers.

Knowing the risks and hazards of fire damage in Voorhees homes is part of the training and education that our technicians receive through the acquisition of their industry accreditations from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC.) Present debris, ash, and other particles can become a catalyst for challenging loss effects like soot residues, smoke particles, odors, and other air quality concerns. Debris can also hide structural weaknesses, which can lead to failures of these materials without an immediate removal plan.

Regardless of the home insurance plan that you have, one of the nearly universal features of coverage for a residence is fire debris removal after a fire. There is no mistaking the immediate benefits that shoveling out ash and burned remnants can have on the structure. Our SERVPRO professionals can work directly with your provider to determine the extent of your coverage.

The removal of loose debris and sediments can significantly reduce potential soot particles from aerosolizing more than they already are, and can help to remove many of the potential sources feeding the harsh smoke odors throughout the house. Cleaning and deodorization would be ineffective, and a wasted effort before the appropriate steps get taken to remove charred materials and ash from the premises.

Emergency services are a reliable staple of the work that our team can do when disaster strikes. As a team with years of experience and state-of-the-art fire restoration equipment, we can help your property through nearly every phase of restoration and reconstruction. Give our SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees team a call anytime that you need us at (856) 566-3388.

Voorhees Microbial Growth and SERVPRO's Remediation Methods

12/22/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO's Skilled Technicians Can Rig Negative Air Pressure Devices to Stymie Mold Spore Circulation in a Voorhees Property

Methods for Stopping the Spread of Mold in Voorhees Homes

Microbial threats are among the most destructive forces to affect Voorhees homes. With how quickly these mold organisms can spread throughout the property, the production of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and other health hazards could overwhelm a household. Containment becomes a vital component of the work that our SERVPRO Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT) perform.

Containment practices, in general, can help to slow the spread of a hazardous organism throughout the property, but this stage of mold remediation in Voorhees homes varies based on several factors. Determining the severity of moisture and dampness throughout the household is an excellent gauge of the perimeter of the containment barrier. Spreading mold spores can be limited in dispersing beyond the sealed boundaries surrounding the work area.

Establishing a drying zone and work area involves the application of thick 6mil plastic sheeting attached to a temporary constructed framework (tension poles and PVC pipes) or directly to existing structural elements. Sealing up pathways for VOCs and spores to travel to new areas reduces the affected surfaces and construction materials in the household. We can seal over HVAC vents and registers, and shut these air circulation appliances off, to prevent the movement of spores to new areas of the property.

We have effective remediation practices that can remove the organisms from specific surfaces, such as sanding and media blasting with either bicarbonate of soda or dry ice pellets. In situations where degradation has exceeded the limitations of the material, we have licensed (HIC #13VH01276600) general contractors to oversee controlled demolition and build back.

Containment is ideal for more thorough drying practices as well, as plastic sheeting around the perimeter can help our SERVPRO professionals regulate the airflow and temperature. Elevated temperatures, especially during the colder winter months common to New Jersey, can make evaporative drying more efficient and cost-effective for our customers. Air scrubbers can work especially well in confined, segregated zones to produce negative air pressure--forcing interior air to the exterior of the structure.

Mold remediation is one of the most complex services that our SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees team offers. We have a qualified team of professionals accredited through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) that can help you make mold damages “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call anytime at (856) 566-3388.

We Discuss Critical Information Residents In Voorhees Need To Know About Mold

11/17/2019 (Permalink)

Remember, microbe problems amplify with time.

Important Information Voorhees Residents Should Know About Mold Damage

Microbes are living organisms that pollute our environment, often contaminating the air we breathe or water we drink. Versions of microbes include viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Whenever dealing with water damage in your Voorhees home, there is always the possibility of coming across mold.

A variety of mold, bacteria, and viruses may lead to adverse health conditions. So, when dealing with mold damage to your Voorhees area property, it is vital to understand how to protect yourself and others who might be at risk. Please, do not take microbial contamination lightly, avoid putting yourself in harm’s way, and contact a professional for help.

    •    Fungi are typically multi-cellular organisms that digest materials found in their surroundings to get nutrients rather than eating or making food like animals and plants do.
    •    Bacteria are generally single-celled, live in soil, water, and organic matter.
    •    Viruses are the simplest microbes, lacking many abilities that bacteria or fungi possess. They grow, multiply, and cause diseases inside living entities.

Sounds freaky, at SERVPRO, we know all too well. However, before you panic, we need to mention that microbes are a vital part of our ecosystem, necessary for life. Microbes are everywhere, both indoors and outdoors, typically of minimal concern.

Unfortunately, under certain conditions, they can also become a threat to human health. Regardless of the type, or even the amount of mold present in your home, you want to have a licensed mold damage remediation technician take care of it as soon as possible. SERVPRO offers full-service mold damage mitigation solutions 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.

SERVPRO technicians help control mold growth in indoor environments, eliminate contamination, and create a safe, clean, healthy living environment for your family. You might already know that microbes and water damage go hand-in-hand. Whenever you have a water intrusion, molds take advantage of the opportunity and multiply rapidly.

Remember, microbe problems amplify with time. Never ignore visual signs; get the help you need today. Contact SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees for access to quality mold damage mitigation and remediation solutions throughout Runnemede, Audubon, and Somerdale. Call (856) 566-3388 today.

Secrets to Remediating Mold in Your Voorhees Home

10/31/2019 (Permalink)

Mold damage is not something you want in your home. Call SERVPRO for mold damage remediation.

Tools for Cleaning Air and Mold Colony Removal in Voorhees

Mold remediation is an intricate process that we have worked to excel in, both with efficiency and effectiveness for damaged Voorhees homes. Because we are not the only option of professionals in the area that can address mold damage concerns in your house, the decision should then get made on a team that has invested in the top-tier equipment designed to better protect your household and to reduce restoration and recovery costs when our remediators get to work.

Using the best available equipment in the industry can help our SERVPRO professionals to more efficiently address mold damage in Voorhees homes. Because of how quickly these destructive organisms can spread, and the potential health effects that can allow, limiting exposure is also a top priority of our professionals. To do this, we can utilize air quality equipment to reduce the concentration of both mold spores, disrupted particles, and volatile organic compounds the organism can emit.

One of the most effective tools to accomplish this task is our air scrubbers. These units can get used in multiple locations of the property simultaneously, and continuously filter available air through the machine. The device pulls contaminated air through the scrubber and its onboard HEPA filter and exhausts air with a considerably lower concentration of mold spores and hazardous compounds that can agitate respiratory conditions or cause other health concerns. Under certain conditions, the forced air can be channeled from the structure with flexible, plastic tubing.

Removing the physical colonies is another process altogether, and also an approach in which our remediators rely on our premier recovery tools. Media and soda blasting are two abrasive cleaning techniques designed to remove mold colonization in host materials without damaging the surface or the material’s composition. When applied quickly and correctly, this approach can protect installed structural elements from requiring removal and replacement.

These are just two of the many areas that make up successful mold remediation for your home. Our SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees team can work quickly to address nearly every aspect of mold damage with a swift and experienced plan. Give our remediation specialists a call anytime you discover fungal threats at (856) 566-3388.

Why Voorhees Benefits from our Investment in Training and Equipment for Restoration Services

9/25/2019 (Permalink)

Let SERVPRO show you why with our workmanship in your Voorhees home.

We know what it takes to get your Voorhees home back to normal the correct way.

Property emergencies come in all shapes and sizes in Voorhees, which is why our roster of local technicians undergo comprehensive training in the restoration of water, fire, mold, and storm-related damages. SERVPRO technicians gain qualifications from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) body to ensure they have the right acumen to deal with each property emergency individually and tailor an efficient approach. Should you discover property damage in your home, the first thing you should do is reach out to SERVPRO, and arrange a visit from one of our professional restorers.

Storm

Adverse weather conditions can have lasting consequences for residential properties and their owners. Usually, restoration services involve the temporary repair of structural deficiencies as well as carrying out several vital mitigation procedures to control the extent of the damage. Temporary repairs can help to prevent rainwater or debris from pouring into the property as well as securing it against trespass or otherwise unlawful access if you are temporarily relocated.

The next step for SERVPRO is to prepare the site for the necessary restoration services. Removing large volumes of water from the property is essential to preventing water logging or natural materials like wood becoming overloaded with moisture and expanding. By removing the pressure on the infrastructure of your home, we can then take a more measured approach to the drying process which can take significantly longer in flooded properties due to the effects of water migration across a larger surface area.

Homeowners with storm damage in their Voorhees home may require third-parties to repair certain parts of the home. SERVPRO can perform deodorization, sanitization, and mitigate against potential damages of the property while third parties are sought. We can act on your behalf, using trusted Voorhees-based contractors and engineers to ensure that you only have to deal with one company, throughout the restoration service. Once your home has been returned to its preloss condition, our restorers can handle your paperwork for a stress-free claims process.

Mold

Mold remediation requires expertise to find and address the source of the problem as well as to sort through salvageable and non-salvageable materials. Although mold damage in your Voorhees home can be harmful to your health, it is more likely to create unsanitary conditions in your home, including musty odors and unpleasant visible signs on furnishings, walls, and ceilings. Our process is designed to overcome microbial growth issues by working to remediate the source of the problem and prevent it from coming back.

SERVPRO technicians are trained in a water restoration as well as applied structural drying. Both these qualifications come in useful when remediating mold issues because they are focused on drying methods. Mold, like all microbes, rely on water to survive. By removing the source of water, we can prevent mold from growing overnight during operation or several months down the line. To access these damp spots, our technicians may need to remove items restricting access, including assessing your drywall and other porous materials.

Removing structural contents from the affected area may be necessary to allow access underneath carpets, in fittings and other crevices. These gaps can be prime culprits in causing mold growth because they retain moisture. Once the area is dry, SERVPRO can replace the removed items of your Voorhees home and perform vital mitigation techniques to reduce recurring issues. These may include repainting walls with anti-microbial paints, professionally disinfecting key areas, and treating both sides of carpet with biocide using pressure sprays.

Fire

The main challenge facing homeowners with fire damage in Voorhees is to control potential losses without risking further expenses. Housefires are tricky restoration services to carry out because there are several factors at play. The types of material that combust as well as the temperature, air pressure, and humidity all have a role to play in the extent of damage caused. Since combusting materials undergo composite changes as well as chemical reactions, a professional, trained restorer is essential in all fire-related incidents.

SERVPRO is a restoration service based in Voorhees that understands that no two fires are the same. We conduct pre-tests of materials and analyze the composition of soot and smoke residues. During the testing phase, we can conduct auxiliary checks on your Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC.) HVAC circulate air which makes them likely to imbibe hot smoke or soots. Without careful inspection, these systems can quickly work against restoration procedure by spewing out soot or smoke after rooms have been restored.

If you would like to help with the process, a SERVPRO can direct the restoration service but may need to operate on walls, appliances, or fittings alone to prevent secondary damages. Odor particles can often linger on after soot or smoke residues have been cleared away. Our technicians are equipped with a full range of vaporizing solvents, spray-on deodorants, and even advanced Ozone generators to prevent malodors from becoming a lasting issue after a house fire in your Voorhees home.

Water

Comprehensively drying your property is the core goal when restoring water damage in your Voorhees home. Odors are more prominent in humid, moist conditions as well as the likelihood of microbial growth. The principle of drying is to create a fluid motion of air that encourages evaporation. In enclosed properties, a lack of airflow is what allows moisture pockets to develop and slowly but surely cause damage to your infrastructure, contents, and fittings.

We use air-movers to allow circulation into areas that lack natural air movement to speed up the complicated drying process. There are two types of air-mover, centrifugal and axial air movers. Generally speaking, water cleanup operations use centrifugal air movers because they create more air-pressure and therefore have a more significant impact on the drying process. In some cases, we may deploy axial air movers when rooms or items benefit from a slower, gentler drying procedure, but this is only the case in a small percentage of our water restoration services.

Encouraging evaporation naturally creates a more humid environment. In overnight restoration services, SERVPRO can deploy dehumidification equipment to prevent the affected area from becoming too humid- which can lead to troublesome microbial growth issues- or the surrounding air becoming overloaded with moisture and slowing the drying process. During the procedure, SERVPRO technicians can take regular measurements of the relative indoor humidity using thermo hygrometers. By taking regular measurements, we can adapt dynamically to the changing humidity levels in your home and ensure the drying process is as efficient as it can be.

SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees invests into training and equipment that allows our restoration services to stay ahead of the curve. Contact us for professional cleanup of fire, mold, water or fire incidents at (856) 566-3388.

Older Homes in New Jersey Have Higher Risk of Fire

3/29/2019 (Permalink)

Old Homes in New Jersey are More Susceptible to Fire Damage

If your house is more than 40 years old, it can harbor some unseen fire risks. If you learn about them ahead of time, you can take action to prevent a fire from starting—and keep your home sweet home safe for many more years to come.

Outdated Wiring

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are about 46,000 fires involving home electrical systems each year, and the majority of those could be prevented with a routine inspection. The CPSC says that in many cases, homes that were built between 40 and 100 years ago hadn't been inspected since they were built.

Be alert to obvious warning signs of a failing electrical system:

  • flickering or dim lights
  • a shrinking of your television picture
  • frequent power outages
  • sparks
  • unusual sounds like sizzles or burning smells
  • smoke
  • any kind of electrical shock
  • damaged insulation
  • warm or hot outlets or switches
  • reliance on extension cords for everyday use

For Fire Restoration Needs Call SERVPRO of Haddon Heights/Voorhees @ 856-566-3388

If you can't remember the last time your electrical system was inspected, hire a certified electrician or electrical inspector to prevent a potential disaster. Even if you've had an inspection less than a decade ago, you should contact a professional immediately if you start to notice the warning signs of a bad electrical system. Hire only a Licensed Electrician to do electrical work.

Balloon Framing

In newer homes, each floor is individually constructed to ensure that fire stops between them, but in balloon-frame homes, there's nothing to stop a fire from spreading. Commonly used from the late 1800s through about 1940, balloon framing was a construction method in which a continuous wood stud wall stretched all the way from the foundation of a home to the attic. If your home has balloon framing, flames can spread from the floor to the roof in just seconds.

If you aren’t sure what kind of framing your house has, hire a skilled professional to inspect it. If your home was constructed with balloon framing, a major remodel—to open up the walls and ceilings and install solid blocking to act as fire stops—may be your only option. Alternatively, you may be able to install insulation in empty cavities that would slow or prevent the spread of fire.

Myths About Mold

3/8/2019 (Permalink)

Hidden Mold Damage in Runnemede, NJ

Which one doesn’t fit with the rest? Mold is big. Mold is bad. Mold is scary. Mold is common. When it comes to mold there is a lot of misinformation floating around out there. Mention the word “mold” and people will flee in panic. In reality mold can be a serious problem, but with a little common sense and the right information you can learn to discern myth from fact and make wise decisions in your dealings with mold.

Overreactions to mold

With all the misinformation about mold out there it is easy to over react. Here are four "myths' that are over reactions to mold.

Myth 1: All Mold Is Bad

Nope! Have you ever eaten cheese or take penicillin? Mold is used in the making of many kinds of cheese and in the manufacturing of antibiotics (though things have come along way sense the first antibiotic).

Myth 2: All Mold Causes Health Problems

While mold certainly can cause health effects, it is not true that all molds cause health problems in all people. In reality the affect of mold on people varies greatly. Molds produce allergens, and while some people will be allergic to the allergens produced by mold not everyone will react to mold, and the affects can be varied depending on ones sensitivity to mold People who are highly sensitive to mold may develop allergic reactions and show symptoms such as difficulty breathing, bloody noses, itchy and watery eyes, etc. People with already compromised immune symptoms are also at risk for reacting to mold, and some studies have suggested that serious health effects can arise from repeated exposure to mold, so it is not something to play around with.

Myth 3: There Should be No Mold Inside

In reality mold is all around us and is very natural. There are mold spores in the air you are breathing and there is really no way around this unless you decide to live inside a plastic, environmentally controlled bubble. The problem is not that there is mold indoors the problem is with the concentration of mold indoors. Mold should not be growing in your walls or on surfaces as that can be a problem and contribute to allergic reactions. We will always live with mold, the question is how much mold should we live with? The answer to that is still being worked out. As mold affects people differently you should talk to your doctor if you think you are suffering from exposure to mold and you take steps to reduce your exposure to mold. Hiring a professional mold remediation company like SERVPRO is a good option.

 Myth 4: Bleach Kills Mold

This is kind of a half truth. Bleach may kill certain kinds of mold on non-porous surfaces, however, it is not clear that bleach can kill all kinds of mold nor kill mold on porous surfaces such as wood. Research is continuing to be done on the effectiveness of bleach as a mold cleanup agent. It should be noted that using bleach to “kill” mold poses its own health risks and is not a recommended solution by EPA or OSHA. Bleach is also very corrosive and can cause further damage if not used correctly.

Myths that understate the problem

Just as there are many “facts” that overstate the mold problem, there are also many “facts” that understate the problem. Here are four of them.

Myth 1: Killing Mold is Enough, I Don’t Need to Remove it

Killing mold is not enough. Putting aside the conflicting reports on what kills mold, simply killing mold does not remove the health affects as the allergens are still present even in dead mold. To properly protect against health effects, removal of the affected areas is often necessary. Care must be taken when removing the affected areas so that the allergens and mold is not spread throughout the house. That is why professional mold remediation services are often necessary to properly fix a mold problem.

Bad “Fact” 2: Mold is Natural, You Shouldn’t Worry About it

While mold may be natural, consistent exposure to mold can have negative affects on ones health. If mold is growing in your home or place of business it needs to be addressed as it will deteriorate your building and can cause health problems.

Myth 3: If You Only See a Little Mold it is Probably Nothing to Worry About

If mold is to the point where it is visibly growing on surfaces in your home you have a problem. Mold is like an iceberg, you generally only see the tip of it while the majority is below the surface. If you see a little bit of mold you most likely have more growing under the surface out of site.

Myth 4: Cleaning up Mold isn’t Hard. You Should Do it Yourself

This is another half truth. While you may be able to clean up certain kinds of mold in small quantities most people are not equipped to do proper mold remediation. Simply wiping down the evidence is not good enough. To properly “cleanup” a mold problem you must identify the cause, isolate the area to keep the mold from spreading, and clean and or remove the affected surfaces. Unless you know how to setup a containment unit, have a couple of commercial sized HEPA air filtration units, protective gear, HEPA vacuums, specialized cleaning agents, and can do a wet extraction to keep mold spores from spreading, you should probably call a professional mold remediation company.
