Why You Can Trust SERVPRO Team Fabiani After A Fire

Our professionals are highly-trained, with the experience, tools, and knowledge to clean up fire damage and remove the smell of smoke.

In keeping with our goal to restore your property and cherished possessions to their pre-fire condition, we use appropriate personal protective measures to safely clean, deodorize and restore your property.

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you give us a call. Our specialist will ask a series of questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us arrive quickly with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We will carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, SERVPRO can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We will then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces

SERVPRO uses specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing

We will clean all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Smoke Damage After Building Fire

6/15/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke Damage After a Fire in Your Voorhees Building?

Here's What To Do:

If you experience a fire in your commercial building, it’s not only the flames that you need to be concerned about. In some cases, smoke can cause even more damage.

The following are a few reasons that smoke cleaning should be performed as soon as possible after a fire.

  1. Smoke Travels Farther Than Flames

Even if the fire was small or contained to a specific area, there may be smoke damage beyond this point. Smoke travels through the air and carries soot and other contaminants as it does. Because of this, it is important to have smoke cleaning done throughout the building, whether the flames spread far or not.

  1. It Can Cause Long-Term Damage

While fire damage is often obvious, smoke damage can be less so. Smoke and soot particles can find their way into small crevices where they can begin to cause problems for your belongings. This is especially true for electronics, as the acidic elements in the smoke can cause the metal and hardware to corrode. If you believe that your computers, televisions or equipment have been affected, do not turn them on until they have been examined to prevent making the damage worse.

  1. Odor Can Be Difficult to Remove

It may be fairly easy to remove the visible signs of smoke and fire damage, but the smell can linger for long afterward. Smoke particles can become trapped in the walls, carpeting and porous items, so you should include these in the cleanup process as well. Smoke odor can be stubborn, but a fire restoration company will have professional equipment that should be able to remove it from the air and your belongings.

After a fire, it can be easy to focus on the damage that you can see, but you should be sure to pay attention to that which is less visible as well. Performing smoke cleaning is an important part of the restoration process and should be done thoroughly to return your building to its previous condition.

The Cost of Fire Damage Restoration.

From Emergency Services to Rebuilding Damaged Areas: SERVPRO of Haddon Heights/Voorhees Manages All Aspects of Structural and Contents Recovery After A Fire.

A reliable and integrated response to a fire disaster quickly calms the panic felt by property owners in the aftermath of a fire. Few residents feel the need to prepare for the steep learning curve of cleaning fire residues, repairing and restoring charred structural components, and eliminating overwhelming malodors until the unspeakable happens. Even with insurance, many fear financial ruin, as they survey the chaos and loss. After a fire, you need a disaster survival partner.

Should I Try to Clean Up Fire Damage Myself?

One of the ways you might consider saving on restoration costs is to take on the cleaning of fire damage in your Voorhees property yourself. A small fire that was contained quickly might seem within your abilities. Unfortunately, you have no readily available method to determine whether the damage confined itself to the space where the fire started. The residues created during the combustion of building materials, foods, grease, oils, and other contents are sometimes hard to discern and even more challenging to follow into other areas inside your property. Consider the following:

  • Smoke and soot, the incompletely consumed fuels burned, drift freely on air currents.
  • The heat of the fire drives residues to move upwards, even into second and third stories of your dwelling.
  • The HVAC system, frequently operating normally when the fire starts, carries smoke and soot throughout your home via its ductwork.
  • Odors borne within soot particles hidden in cracks and crevices can persist long after all visible signs of fire damage disappear.

What Special Skills Do Fire and Smoke Restoration Experts Have?

Above all, SERVPRO Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT) offer knowledge gleaned through rigorous coursework completed through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) and experience gained on the job with our seasoned mentors. The soiling deposited by smoke is unlike ordinary dirt and grime. Attempting to clean it up using standard techniques can at best smear and stain surfaces. At worst, failure to successfully remove fire residues permits continuous deterioration of structures and allows hazardous substances to linger in spaces where you and your family eat, sleep, play, study, and attempt to live life as usual.

How Does a Professional Fire Restoration Company Begin the Structuring of a Comprehensive Restoration?

When our crew arrives, our highly-qualified project manager assesses the damage and begins to develop a work plan. We check for safety issues before beginning the first phase of tasks. Then a series of mitigation steps ensures that the progressive harm halts. Steps might include:

  • Water removal
  • Disabling of the HVAC system to prevent further spread of residues
  • Ventilation of affected areas
  • Containment of heavily involved spaces, and set up of air scrubbing systems
  • Crew members assigned to commence fire damage mitigation often don personal protective equipment (PPE)

What Does Remediation Look Like During Fire Damage Recovery?

As crews get busy with preliminary mitigation tasks, management evaluates the types and levels of smoke and soot damage in all spaces of your home. Using knowledge obtained during IICRC training and on the job experience, senior members of the team match cleaning products and methods with the residues found.

How do we handle dry soot?

Loose and ashy residues dust, brush, or vacuum away. Dry sponges, sometimes called chemical sponges, are useful in removing light coatings on surfaces.

How do we handle wet soot?

Sticky coatings often need the help of a cleaning product to loosen the bond between the soot and the surface. Soaps and detergents, often applied as sprays, contain wetting agents and surfactants that help break up the residues so it can be wiped or rinsed off.

How do we handle protein-based soot?

Tightly adhered residues that are actually dehydrated foods and cooking grease and oils are notoriously tricky to remove. Solvents and abrasive products or tools assist in dislodging this common and challenging fire damage.

What Can We Do About Charred Structures?

The heat and flames sometimes burn deeply into woodwork or other fixtures. Our crews use brushes, scrapers, and sanders to remove the damage. Sometimes the remediation is inadequate to return the materials to preloss condition. Our general contractor license permits us to offer repair and rebuilding services in these cases, saving you time, expense, and the stress of hiring additional contractors.

Take advantage of the wrap-around services of SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees when coping with fire damage in your residence. We can manage everything from the initial assessment to rebuilding after the mitigation and remediation complete. One call to (856) 566-3388 sets the restoration ball in motion.

Preventing Dryer Vent Fires

4/1/2022 (Permalink)

Residential Fires in Haddon Heights Often Occur Due to Situations That Could be Prevented – Taking Precautions is Important.

Keeping your Haddon Heights home safe from fires may not always be possible. However, many fires are preventable when a few safety precautions are put in place.

What Causes Dryer Fires?

There can be various reasons that a dryer catches on fire, including faulty wiring or overheating. Over one-third of these fires is a result of lint buildup. This problem can result in the need for fire damage restoration in Haddon Heights. There are things that can let you know you may have a lint problem such as your clothes take longer to dry, or your dryer seems to be overheating.

Preventing Dryer Fires

The best course of action is to be aware of what you should do and things to avoid to ensure your dryer works efficiently and safely. These include the following:

  • Do not use your dryer without the lint filter in place. Clean your filter after drying each load of laundry. If it becomes clogged, have a professional clean it.
  • Do not operate your dryer when you are away. It may be tempting to toss in a load of wet clothes before heading out the door but do not do it. If something does happen while you are home, you will know it immediately. If it occurs while you are out, your entire house could go up in flames.
  • Do not overload the dryer. Dryers need to ventilate correctly to dry efficiently. Overloading can cause an excessive amount of lint to build up and block the ventilation.
  • Have SERVPRO inspect your venting system to ensure there is unobstructed circulation of hot air
  • Blockage of Ducts can be cleaned by our technicians

Sometimes no matter what you do, a fire can occur. When that happens, our team can provide emergency fire mitigation services to help you recover. Call SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees 856-566-3388 for expert fire damage restoration service. We're Here to Help 24/7,365.

Where Should You Place Smoke Detectors?

3/13/2022 (Permalink)

Where to Place the Smoke Detectors in Your Home.

Whether you’re building a new home or adding an addition to your home, you want to be sure you put smoke detectors in the right place for the greatest fire safety.

There are guidelines for the placement of smoke detectors that you should keep in mind. You may need to upgrade the smoke detectors in older parts of a home at the same time that you install new smoke detectors in an addition. Same applies if you are upgrading your office. The International Building Code (IBC), is a comprehensive compilation of safe building guidelines, which includes a requirement to upgrade an entire home’s smoke detection system at the same time any major remodeling occurs, such as a large addition.

Did You Know? Smoke detectors must be connected to one another and wired to the home’s electrical system. This is called an “interconnected” system, and if one smoke detector goes off, all of them will, alerting folks throughout the house. The battery-operated smoke detectors already in your home will probably need to be replaced by an interconnected system, if you don’t already have one.

You should call your local building authority to find out if your community has adopted IBC’s smoke detector rules. Fortunately, the guidelines as to where to put smoke detectors are simple, so be sure to learn how many you’ll need and where to place them to protect your family. Here are some good guidelines:

  • Install detectors on or as near to the ceiling as possible. Many smoke detectors are designed to mount to a ceiling, but some can also be wall-mounted when attaching to a ceiling isn’t feasible. In this case, smoke detectors should be within a few inches of the ceiling. IBC requires a detector be installed within 12 inches of the ceiling, but the closer, the better.

  • Install a smoke detector in every sleeping area. This means every bedroom or any other space in your home where someone might sleep.

  • A detector should be installed in a hallway if one or more bedroom doors open from the hallway. Just one detector is necessary for this spot, whether the hallway serves one bedroom or three. The detector should be centrally located between the bedroom doors.

  • Install a detector in any room that lies on the path between a sleeping area and the closest exterior door. For example, if a bedroom door opens into a hallway and to get outside from there, you’d have to go through a great room, put a detector in the great room. If the route of escape then passes through the kitchen, a detector should be located in the great room and in the kitchen. Any room you’ll pass through from the bedroom to the exterior door should have a detector.

  • Install at least one smoke detector on every level of your home. While smoke detectors are vital in sleeping areas, you’ll need to put one on every floor, even if that floor has no bedrooms. This includes an unfinished basement.

  • To prevent false triggering of the smoke detectors, don’t install them too near a stove or a steamy bathroom. Nothing’s more frustrating than all the detectors in the house going off because someone burned the toast. The IBC recommends positioning smoke detectors a minimum distance away from stoves, ovens, and bathrooms, depending on the type of detector being installed:

    • A photoelectric smoke detector (triggered when smoke or steam blocks a beam of light) should be located no closer than six feet from a cooking appliance, such as a stove or oven, and no closer than three feet from a bathroom door.

    • An ionization smoke detector (smoke enters a chamber and interrupts an electrical current, which triggers the alarm) should be installed no closer than 20 feet from a cooking appliance, and no closer than three feet from a bathroom door. Ionization smoke detectors are sensitive to even tiny amounts of smoke or steam.

How Can Wildfire-Related Fire Damage Restoration Be Avoided in Voorhees?

11/19/2021 (Permalink)

Kitchen fires cause major damage. SERVPRO techs have the training and experience in all phases of fire damage mititgation.

While Not Always Possible, You Can Protect Your Voorhees Home from Wildfires.

As Voorhees residents, we all benefit from our township’s proximity to both the big city and natural areas with crystal-clear lakes and intriguing wildernesses. Unfortunately, in the springtime, the nearby Pinelands also make wildfires a real threat. There are, however, key ways to mitigate these fire risks.

Your neighbors at SERVPRO know what it takes to lessen your chances of suffering severe fire damage and have successfully performed fire damage restoration on numerous Voorhees residences. After years of completing house fire clean-up, smoke remediation, and fire restoration on fire-damaged homes, our skilled technicians have learned that doing certain simple things before an event can greatly decrease your risks of suffering the worst fire-related problems. Some measures you can take to achieve this goal include:

  • Keeping your yards well-watered and free of clutter
  • Regularly trimming vegetation around your home
  • Periodically spraying water on your home with a garden hose during particularly dry periods of the fire season
  • Avoiding keeping flammable materials in or around your house and furnishing it with fire-resistant/fire-retardant materials whenever possible
  • Vigilantly listening to all warnings of approaching fires and being prepared to leave when necessary
  • Turning off the electric and other utilities before leaving your residence in advance of a forest fire

In taking all of these steps, homeowners can often disrupt a wildfire’s path, starve it of fuel, make it more difficult for materials to ignite, and move their most valuable possessions out of the home before they are consumed.

With all that said, whenever you need fire damage restoration services, don’t hesitate to call your friends at SERVPRO of Haddon Heights/Voorhees for assistance. We are always ready for your call at (856) 566-3388.

Involve Reputable Restorers Immediately to Avoid Delaying Fire Damage Restoration in Haddon Township

Whether it is a tiny kitchen fire or a large-scale fire, you need to act quickly to prevent further damage. Expert fire damage restoration reduces long-term smoke damage and may require water damage restoration to avoid mold growth. Smoke and soot can quickly spread throughout the property, even to places that are not affected by fire, if not dealt with quickly. SERVPRO can efficiently address fire damage in your Haddon Township property.

Is It Expensive to Restore My Property?

It is essential to remember that smoke and soot residues in your property can continue to damage various surfaces even after extinguishing the fire. When putting out a fire, firefighters often shatter doors or windows and punch holes in ceilings and walls. Extinguishing the flames with water can create significant damage to your floor and drywall. SERVPRO inspectors can determine the cost of repairs based on the following:

  • The intensity of the damage
  • The number of days restoration was delayed
  • Repairs required

Our SERVPRO restorers have gone through thorough training in using various cleaning products. We can use a stain absorber mixed with a solvent spotter to clean fragile materials or surfaces that cannot withstand the direct application of water-based products or aggressive agitation. We can also use air scrubbers to identify and eliminate hazardous chemicals, gases, and odors.

The more soot and smoke residues settle in your property; the damage is more extensive. Contact SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees for effective restoration at (856) 566-3388. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

How Professionals Clean Fire Damage in Voorhees

When a fire strikes home call SERVPRO for the fire remediation services to have your home back to preloss condition.

Voorhees Fire Damage Recovery: What to Expect from Professionals

Recovering from the effects of a household fire is an experience with which most residents have no personal experience. After a fire breaks out in your home, finding reliable professionals who know the steps to minimize the harm and jump-start the restoration is crucial. Ordinary cleaning tactics do not fit the bill, but our Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)-trained crews have efficient strategies that do.

A surprise for many Voorhees fire damage victims is the significant water damage faced. Water, and to a lesser extent, chemicals, are the primary means used by firefighters to knock out a blaze. Water damage is just as or more destructive as fire damage, and when combined, the water damage must resolve first. Slip and fall risks and the risk of electrical shock in wet areas are two reasons why our full-service disaster recovery company responds immediately to your water removal and structural drying needs. Building materials left wet longer than 24 to 48 hours are prime mold breeding habitats, pushing for speedy water remediation.

Certified Fire Damage Restoration Specialists

SERVPRO employees often hold more than one certification from the IICRC, so we make sure the crew at your home includes Fire and Smoke Restoration Technicians (FSRT). Completing the course prepares our team to implement industry best practices and technical procedures for completing the remediation of fire and smoke damaged environment.

We match products and methodology to ensure the range of sooty residues presented resolve without worsening the damage. Paper and wood burn hot and fast, leaving ash that vacuums, brushes, and dry sponges off. Fires that smolder, slower-burning with heavy smoke, include electrical or fabric-fueled events. The thick, sticky soot deposited leads SERVPRO employees to use agitation and cleaning products with surfactants and wetting agents to dislodge.

Kitchen fires are frequent, and the protein-based soot resulting from grease or food fire is thin, very foul-smelling, and tightly adhered to surfaces. SERVPRO employees use solvents and abrasive tools to loosen the bond.

SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees stands ready to assist homeowners with the complexities of fire damage remediation. For a fast response and a team that inspires confidence, call (856) 566-3388.

SERVPRO Follows a Balanced Approach to Water and Fire Damage Restoration for Voorhees Homes

New Jersey communities like Voorhees located across the Delaware River and southeast of Philadelphia have a rich history, starting with the Indigenous Lenni-Lenape. Hunting, fishing, and gathering sustained their families along with the cultivation of corn, pumpkins, and beans until European colonization displaced them. Lakes and waterways provided transportation for the new arrivals, and they settled in what is now Voorhees by 1695 as people moved into the countryside south of the Delaware. The fledgling community was part of Waterford Woodlynne in the County of Gloucester.

What Replaced the Wooded Areas Home to the Lenni-Lenape?

Wealthy individuals purchased large tracts of land during the 1700s in proto-Voorhees, transforming the forest into agrarian parcels and wandering streams into water power for mills. Small business districts grew up adjacent first to stagecoach stations on romantically named byways like Long-A-Coming Road, later called Berlin Road, and finally Route 561. Once rail travel became established, the depots replaced stagecoach stops as business and community centers.

Are There Landmark Properties in Voorhees Connecting to Earlier Times?

Although the land is now a destination for disc golf and hiking trails, the Stafford Farm was a constant on the corner of White Horse Road and Evesham Avenue for over 150 years. The farm in the Glendale neighborhood of Voorhees covered 100 acres. The original owner was John Stafford's son, moving to the parcel after establishing Short Hills Farm in Cherry Hill in 1773. John Stafford is noteworthy as he served during the Revolutionary War as General George Washington's personal guard. After John's son purchased the land,  Stafford Farm was

  • Maintained and worked for over 150 years
  • Owned by one family longer than any other property in the area
  • Provided a welcome highlight for those traversing through Voorhees with grazing cattle and horses as recently as 1999

When Did Voorhees Emerge as a Named Township?

Although the area was settled over 300 years ago, Voorhees' establishment and naming occurred only 120 years ago. Three Waterford Township residents petitioned the State Legislature to make the land comprising the current community of Voorhees a separate township. Because then-Governor Foster McGowan Voorhees granted the request, the newly minted township was named in his honor.

How Do SERVPRO Fire and Smoke Damage Professionals Restore Voorhees Properties?

How Can I Reduce Losses After a Housefire in Voorhees?

9/9/2020 (Permalink)

Managing a fire loss site correctly requires qualified technicians with experience in restoration.

SERVPRO Fire Damage Restoration Services Helps Voorhees Residents Overcome Losses by Mitigating and Restoring Residential Properties.

What should I do in the immediate aftermath of a fire?
After evacuating the property, you should contact the fire department and your insurance company when you are ready to begin a claim; contact a Voorhees restoration service to conduct an assessment of the damages. The best time to control losses after a fire is immediately after the event. Soots, soils, and odors can continue producing once a fire is put out. Any water used in the firefighting effort may cause further harm to your property as it bonds with soots and smoke residues. We recommend arranging a professional restoration as soon as possible when dealing with fire to reduce the expense of your claim.

How can I mitigate fire losses in my home?
You need trained fire damage restoration technicians to restore your Voorhees home. However, providing a fire marshall declares your property safe for entry, you can begin the mitigation procedure while waiting for SERVPRO technicians to arrive. Open windows in your property to ventilate the space as much as possible. Ventilation can help to dry a wet property and allow odors to disperse. It is essential to avoid too much foot traffic over the affected area, but you may benefit from placing towels or coverings over floors and surfaces to catch falling soots. Some areas of damage are best left to the professionals, so avoid applying chemicals or water to walls and ceilings. Light vacuuming to remove dry soots can be useful.

What areas should I avoid after a property fire?
- Avoid attempting to clean areas of heavy soiling, appliances and walls or ceilings
- Do not introduce chemicals to the affected area
- If you feel a city may be unsafe, do not enter

Managing a fire loss site correctly requires qualified technicians with experience in restoration. Contact SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees at (856) 566-3388.

After fire damage restoration happens in your Haddon Heights property, one of the first thoughts many homeowners have is, "How can I avoid this situation again?"

Fortunately, there are many actions you can take to limit the future potential for fire loss in your home. While no property can be 100% insulated from fire occurring, some steps you can take to minimize it include:

  • Talk with your insurance agent about fireproofing methods that can work to benefit your homeowner's policy
  • Replace mattresses manufactured before 2007 as they do not meet current fire safety standards
  • Incorporate fire-resistant plants around your home such as French lavender, red monkeyflower or sage
  • Invest in an environmental monitoring system that reports elevations in moisture or temperature
  • Do monthly walkarounds and look for overloaded outlets and improper usage of extension cords

Do Spray-On Deodorizers Work to Remove Smoke Odors?

After the charred building materials and contents get removed, and the smoke residues get wiped away using the professional cleaning agents, some odors may remain. If this is the case, SERVPRO techs have a host of different applications to use within the structure to neutralize odors at the source. Over the counter, spray-on deodorizers may cover the smell for a short time, however until the soot particles get eliminated, the scent will continue to return over and over.

From start to finish during this type of cleanup, it is common to see machines known as air scrubbers running. They capture airborne particles, including ones too small to be seen by the human eye and work to improve the overall air quality before the more robust odor control applications get applied as needed.

The techs can inspect the ductwork throughout the home and determine if the smoke scent is resident and if the ductwork needs cleaning to render it odor-free.

One of the most frequently turned-to methods is a thermal fogger. This small device uses a solvent that gets heated until it becomes a fog. The technician then releases it throughout areas where smoke odors remain. The fog works precisely as the air does during a fire. During a fire, hot air expands, and when it does, soot particles get pushed into porous items, making them difficult to remove. In many cases, the solvent pushing its way into a porous object and eradicating the soot particle at the molecular level is enough to eliminate on-site fire odors.

Who Repairs My Home After a Fire?

SERVPRO technicians are conscientious to work within the scope of insurance coverage and communicate with both the adjuster and homeowner to ensure nothing out of coverage gets performed. Once the restoration services complete, the crew chief goes over the mitigation efforts undertaken with the homeowner and/or the adjuster. They also make a note of any repairs or rebuilding that needs to occur to sufficiently bring the home to the same condition as before the fire happened.

With their general contractor license #HIC #13VH01276600, the techs can offer reconstruction services that range from rebuilding gutted rooms to the installation of all types of flooring or painting over walls where sealant got applied to eliminate soot odor. Since finding a contractor to begin repairs can be a stressful activity, using one service for both the remediation and rebuilding is a smart move because it saves time, and the techs already know exactly what needs to get repaired.

When your home needs fire damage restoration, do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees at (856) 566-3388. The certified technician has comprehensive training handling all types of fire loss and restoring your home and contents to their preloss condition using their advanced equipment and cleaning method.

For Fire Restoration in Haddon Heights Call SERVPRO

If an inferno ever starts inside your house in Haddon Heights, the smoke coming from it can cause damage to building materials and contents that are far away from the blaze's source. When smoke contacts cooler surfaces, it solidifies in the form of soils and soot residues.

How can you clean my possessions that got coated in soot?

During fire restoration in Haddon Heights, our SERVPRO crew can utilize a variety of techniques, tools, and chemical products to prevent your building materials and contents from being discarded and replaced. Cleaning items of yours that got negatively affected is the most cost-effective way of restoring your structural components and possessions. When cleaning soot-coated items, we always follow the basic principles of cleaning while utilizing the elements of cleaning at the same time.

Principles of Cleaning

  • First, our technicians locate all of the soot residues present by carefully inspecting your entire structure.
  • Next, we identify the types of residues present based on the kinds of materials that got burned in the fire.
  • We then identify the types of surfaces that got affected so we know what techniques will work best.
  • Then, our team can take steps to capture and remove all of the residues present.
  • Finally, we dispose of the residues in sealed plastic bags so that no soot can spread during the removal.

Elements of Cleaning

  • Temperature: Since heat can increase the speed of chemical reactions in chemical products, we always use an appropriate temperature depending on the type of cleaning solution and the material being cleaned.
  • Agitation: We can use towels, brushes, or air and water pressure to agitate soiled surfaces and dislodge the residues.
  • Chemical Action:  Many cleaning products use chemical actions to remove soils such as dissolving, emulsifying, bleaching, or oxidizing.
  • Time: Some chemical products require different amounts of dwell time to work effectively.

Cleaning soiled building materials or contents after a fire burns in your house in Runnemede or Somerdale is a job best left to the professionals. For assistance, call SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees at (856) 566-3388.

READY How Long Can It Take To Complete Fire Restoration In My Voorhees Property?

6/4/2020 (Permalink)

Let the SERVPRO team mitigate your fire damaged home in Voorhees. They will use the most updated equipment around.

With the Resources SERVPRO Offers, You Can Cut Down the Time it Takes to Restore Your Fire Damaged Property

Fire damage restoration may involve the removal of materials from your property or reversing damages caused by flames, heat, and smoke from a fire. The restoration process can take a few days or stretch out for several months before all traces of an incident disappear from your property. SERVPRO helps Voorhees property owners by availing skilled technicians and other resources necessary to complete the process with minimal complications, "Like it never even happened."

When should I expect a shorter fire restoration process in my Voorhees home?

Fixing a Voorhees property after fire damage takes several steps, which can be categorized into:

  • Emergency or containment
  • Teardown and rebuilding
  • Cleanup and drying
  • Deodorization

Emergency steps might range from moving valuables away from the property, boarding up openings on the roof or walls, to the application of oil or other protective products on surfaces to protect them from corrosive residues. The actual steps necessary depend on the intensity of the fire, so minor fire incidents can be resolved faster. For instance, stove flare-ups or other localized damages might only require cleanup and deodorization to resolve.

Does the initial response affect the speed of the restoration?

Before the restoration processes start in earnest, it is common to do some assessment of the damage and also take steps that help in safeguarding materials. Although such processes may seem trivial, how they are done can affect the main restoration processes. When our SERVPRO technicians assess your loss site, we try to establish issues such as:

  • The type of smokes residues on surfaces
  • The materials affected by the fire and firefighting processes
  • Whether there are salvageable items

An assessment helps reveal information that aids in planning the restoration process rather than hoping that no challenges develop later on. Some of the useful information includes establishing whether there are stubborn deposits such as fuel oil soot or protein residues deposited on surfaces since such materials require special cleaning approaches. The assessment also helps establish whether there are many unsalvageable materials at the loss site and thus making the appropriate disposal plans, including bringing enough trashcans and heavy-duty plastic bags to hold the waste before disposal. Combining these minor actions helps ensure convenience and thus speeds up the restoration process.

Which cleaning techniques work faster?

A wide range of cleaning methods can help remove residues, stains, and charring from surfaces or contents affected by the fire.  Cleaning methods can be narrowed down into four main categories:

  • Chemical action
  • Mechanical action
  • Lubrication
  • Dispersion and suspension

Although different methods have varying degrees of effectiveness, it is hard to pick a single method as the fastest because factors such as the type or condition of materials and the type of soils involved influence the outcome. From the advanced training our SERVPRO technicians have, we can assess a situation and pick a method that can produce results fast. For instance, cleaning unfinished wood in cabinets or structural supports can take considerable time because such surfaces are porous allowing residue penetration. The rough surfaces also reduce the effectiveness of conventional cleaning processes, such as wiping with cleaning sponges.

Our technicians overcome these challenges by using unique approaches. If we decide to wet clean such surfaces, we use denatured alcohol, which helps loosen residues while preventing penetrating through the pores of the material. We also use soda blasting, especially when cleaning trusses or other structural supports removing charring and stubborn residue layers faster.

What determines the level of difficulty when removing residues?

Restoring surfaces to their preloss state can take longer if the residues do not come off quickly during cleaning. Residues adhere strongly to surfaces for various reasons. In scorching fires, air movements are more turbulent, so they push smoke residues at higher velocities against surfaces that lead to impingement of residues. Higher temperatures also open up pores on surfaces driving soils deeper into the surface.

Another factor that can lead to stubborn residues is the type of materials the fire affects. Synthetic materials produce wet smoke residues, which are challenging to deal with during cleaning. Such challenges can lengthen the restoration time. Our SERVPRO technicians utilize a wide scope of techniques to overcome the challenges, including using specially formulated cleaning agents and using automated tools, which offer better agitation.

Any uncertainty about restoring your fire-damaged property is easier to address with an experienced team by your side. Call SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees at (856) 566-3388 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Eliminating Toaster Oven Fire Damage in Your Voorhees Home

Fire damage, no matter how large or small, can creep into every nook and cranny of your home without your knowledge. Unfortunately, not all fire damage is immediately visible in the form of soot or smoke. In kitchen appliance fires, including those involving toaster ovens, food proteins can leave invisible residues all around your kitchen that impart a foul odor. These colorless, filmy deposits can be challenging to get rid of with consumer-grade cleaning products.

After using your kitchen extinguisher to take care of fire damage in your Voorhees home, it can feel overwhelming to consider the cleanup that is involved. Not only can soot cover the walls and ceiling, but there are also odor-causing particles in charred cabinets, in the ventilation system, and many other unexpected locations. This is why SERVPRO is available to aid homeowners 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. This experienced team strives to restore your home to its pre-fire condition so you can enjoy using your appliances once more.

When SERVPRO's certified technicians come to your home, they can perform a thorough inspection of your kitchen before formulating a recovery plan. This plan can include removing fire and odor sources, evaluating the fire damage to cabinets and counters, and combating odors from soot and protein residues. The crew also inspects and thoroughly cleans ventilation systems with soot and residue deposits that can spread odors throughout your home.

If your fire extinguisher came in contact with food items, they might have to be discarded due to the safety risks. Consuming food contaminated by fire residue and the chemicals in your fire extinguisher, which can even penetrate canned goods and sealed plastic containers, is not considered safe. However, many appliances and kitchen utensils can be saved with a thorough cleaning. In fire damage cases where charring on cabinetry is superficial, SERVPRO can use gentle blast media, such as baking soda, to eliminate char and deodorize your kitchen.

SERVPRO of Haddon Heights/Voorhees is Faster to Any Size Disaster so that you can enjoy your home free of fire-related risks. If your home needs fast mitigation and restoration, call (856) 566-3388 today.

However, a small fire can quickly disrupt a peaceful summer night, leaving you in need of help. Something as simple as a billowing curtain catching fire from an aromatic candle can upset your whole summer as you restore your home.

If fire damage happens to your Voorhees home, you need to take immediate action. Most fires are not catastrophic, yet they affect your everyday routine. Smoke and soot can travel quickly through your home and air ducts, and eliminating residue can be time-consuming and frustrating. All you need to do is reach out to our 24/7 hotline and allow our team to reach your home with solutions tailored specifically to you.

Aside from ensuring that everyone is safe and no structural fire damage has taken place, you can also take immediate steps to tackle the consequences of the fire. Fire Damage Assessment Safety Checklist for Voorhees Homeowners

As you might have guessed, the most significant potential risk for Voorhees homeowners looking to restore, repair and remediate concerns after a fire loss incident comes down to safety. Often property owners do not have a full understanding of the threats present in a residence after a fire gets extinguished, or even the appropriate gear and equipment designed to keep them safe through the initial inspection and assessment. Knowing how to protect yourself can prevent unnecessary injuries as you work to recover your fire-damaged home.

While many property owners do not have to experience the devastation of fire damage in Voorhees homes, the ones that have could explain how more preparedness for the situation could have helped them to manage the ordeal better. While our trained SERVPRO professionals stay diligently prepared to help all home and business owners contending with the effects of fire loss, you can take a few extra moments to verify that you are doing things safely and correctly on your own.

Our SERVPRO specialists encourage every homeowner to develop a checklist that can help them to ensure they are protecting themselves and working to resolve threats from the time that the fire gets extinguished in the property. It is essential to:

Ensure you have the right safety equipment suited to your specific body. Many respirators, coveralls, and even gloves vary in sizing, and inappropriate decisions can lead to unnecessary exposure.

Have a competent professional, even first responders and firefighters, verify that it is safe to enter the property after extinguishment. There could be structural concerns or other hazards.

Employ machines that help to reduce airborne threats, including soot, smoke, and other potential contaminants. Some available machines at home improvement locations include hydroxyl and ozone generators.

It can be dangerous to rush into a property after a fire damage incident without fully understanding steps designed to keep you safe. For situations that have too many obstacles for you to overcome, you can trust in the fast response and expertise of our SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees team to make it “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call at (856) 566-3388.

Voorhees Fire Restoration Professionals Give Tips for Removing Soot and Smoke From Personal Belongings

6/18/2019 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are difficult to remove. Call SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees for your fire damage restoration needs.

Fire Damage in Voorhees Happens to More than Just the Structure of a House

A fire does more than turn things black with charring. When a resident in Voorhees has a house fire, many of their belongings also sustain damage. Our skilled workers can get these items cleaned up nicely so you and your family can use them again without any of the risks related to smoke or fire damage.

Customers know they can rely on SERVPRO's ability to clean smoke and fire damaged items in Voorhees with excellent results, just like we do the interior of a home. We use some of the same methods to accomplish this, saving you money by keeping restoration costs low, and eliminating the need to replace belongings that only seemed damaged.

The task of removing soot from different articles varies from one type of material to the next. Fabrics of both clothing and washable household textiles require special sudsing agents that can break the soot down and leave these items with a fresh scent. Many times this requires multiple washings. We inspect such items before drying them to avoid setting any stains.

Children's toys can attract soot because of the static electricity in many plastics. While it may seem imperceptible to people, soot particles get drawn to such surfaces. The grain in wooden toys also becomes highly soiled from soot, sometimes bonding to varnishes just like it does to wooden furniture. Kitchen wares can also get layered in soot, and the greasy kind might make you want to throw all of it away.

We can help save you from this additional trouble. For those items that you can wash in water, we can get clean quickly using our ultrasonic water bath equipment. We box these things up, itemizing them as we do so, and take them to our facility.

We keep the contents of each box together as its contents go through the mitigation process of soot removal. We also thoroughly dry these items before repackaging them, so they come back to you in the best condition possible. Any damage we discover gets noted on the item's line on the inventory sheet, so you have no surprises.

SERVPRO of Haddon Heights / Voorhees wants to provide all of our customers with services tailored to their exact needs. Your home in Magnolia or Somerdale may not need as much mitigation as your belongings require, but their loss can create unnecessary hardship. Restoring this instead of leaving you to replace them saves you time, money, and aggravation. Call us at (856) 566-3388, so we can help you with all of your fire damage mitigation needs.

Fire and Smoke Damage in Cherry Hill, NJ

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

Hydroxyl Generator used to help eliminate odors.

When a cooking fire damaged the kitchen in Cherry Hill home one of the biggest concerns for the home owners was odor.

We removed all of the non-salvageable contents and cleaned the ceilings, walls, windows, doors and all flooring surfaces.

During the cleaning process we utilized our Hydroxyl Generator.  This helped eliminate the odor.

The Hydroxyl Generator is a safer alternative to ozone when it comes to air purification and deodorization because you don’t have to evacuate the treatment area to use it!

The Science of the Hydroxyl Generator:

This state-of-the-art system sends UV rays (365nm) (emitted from a TiO2 photo-catalytic lamp) through an anatase-coated glass sleeve to trap huge amounts of titanium dioxide. Next, electron hole pairs form and react with water and oxygen, producing free electrons and hydroxyl radicals that, when dispersed by a fan, literally convert organic and inorganic gases and air pollutants into carbon dioxide and water. Translation: Stinky air is safely neutralized and your customers don’t have to leave the building!

Fire Damages: More Than Meets the Eye

7/6/2018 (Permalink)

Some hoses can pump out up to 1200 gallons per minute.

Along with the obvious damage caused by the flames of a fire loss, there are often hidden damages that SERVPRO® of Haddon Heights/Voorhees are professionally trained to handle. Those damages can include but are not limited to, smoke damage/odor and water damage from firefighter hoses or fire extinguishers.

Smoke Damage

Smoke/soot damage is one of the primary hidden damages of the fire loss. Here are some things to look for to determine whether you have smoke damage:

  • Stained fabric and upholstery
  • Paint discoloration
  • Rust, pitting and corrosion of piping, jewelry, and other metal objects
  • Strong odor
  • Flooring damage

You need to take care of smoke and soot damage, and pronto! This is not the time for a DIY fix in an attempt to save a few bucks on your home’s restoration after a fire.

Failure to properly deal with smoke/soot damage can cause long-term issues for your health as well as your property. Exposure to smoke/soot during fire restoration can occur via the skin and eyes, inhalation and ingestion. Because airborne soot particulate is invisible, you may unknowingly be affected. Once soot enters your bloodstream, it can cause respiratory issues, shortness of breath, bronchitis, asthma, stroke, heart attack, cancer, and even premature death. In infants, even short-term exposure to soot has been shown to have lifelong health consequences.

Water Damage

Before dealing with the fire damage created by smoke/soot, you must first deal with the water damage. Although it’s a relief when firefighters put out the fire, pouring all that water on the flames results in water damage that can cause significant structural issues, damage to your electronic devices, appliances, furniture and important documents and, if not remedied quickly, hazardous mold growth.

Black mold can release dangerous spores into the air that can cause nausea, headaches and severe respiratory problems especially susceptible to children, the elderly and people with deficient immune systems. Pets can also be susceptible to health problems associated with the proliferation of black mold.

It’s important to take care of water damage as soon as possible so you can get on with the rest of the resulting damage, and to ensure hazardous mold does not grow in your property and negatively impact the health of you and your family. The only real viable solution to the dangerous effects of water damage is to hire the professional emergency restoration services of SERVPRO® Haddon Heights/Voorhees to keep your home/ business safe and healthy for you and your family.

SERVPRO® offers the following 7 step process to restore your home or business to the way it was before the loss:

  1. Emergency Contact
  2. Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
  3. Immediate Board-Up and Roof Tarp Service (if needed)
  4. Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)

Preventing Christmas Tree Fires This Holiday Season

12/15/2017 (Permalink)

The National Fire Protection Association reports that between 2007-2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 230 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. These fires caused an average of six deaths, 22 injuries, and $18.3 million in direct property damage annually. Here are some tips to help prevent a fire in your home this holiday season:

  • Choose a tree with fresh needles
  • Cut 2" from the base of the trunk before placing
  • Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from ANY heat source (fireplace, radiator, candles, heaters, lights, etc.).
  • Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit.
  • Add water DAILY
  • Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections
  • Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving home or going to bed.
  • Last but not least, dispose of your tree as soon as the holidays pass. It might be decorative and fun, but the longer a dry, dying tree sits in your house, the more likely your home is to experience and suffer a fire loss.

In the unfortunate instance that tragedy does strike this year, SERVPRO of Haddon Heights/Voorhees provides 24-hour emergency service and is dedicated to being faster to any-sized disaster. We can respond immediately to your home. We understand the stress and worry that comes with emergency damage and the disruption it causes your life. Others small yet important things include keeping small children out of the kitchen and keeping the amount of people in there at once to a minimum. Common sense and careful cooking will help to make sure that your holiday dinner doesn't turn into a holiday disaster.

Excessive Clutter Can Cause Fire Damage

6/8/2017 (Permalink)

Excessive clutter contributed to the start of this fire.

On a Saturday morning in Runnemede this electrical fire broke out in a cluttered basement.  Fortunately no one was injured.  Clutter is the scattering of many personal items within a building, and specifically, within a certain area(s) of that building. Hoarding is one of the main causes of clutter, and while hoarding is in itself a harmless practice, it could have devastating results if a fire were to break out.

Hoarding/clutter can be dangerous for a wide variety of reasons during an emergency. When trying to move around a cluttered room, mobility is limited. That limitation becomes exponentially more hazardous during an emergency situation. Safe and rapid movement may be made difficult and dangerous for residents, which make a safe escape near impossible. Clutter not only increases risk for the occupants of the building, it also increases the risk for the safety personnel trying to combat the flames and save lives.

With extensive clutter, firefighters may have difficulty finding walls or structural landmarks in the building, especially with already dangerous smoky conditions. In addition to the conditions the clutter generates, it is also a “fuel” for the fire to continue to use to burn, prolonging the emergency and the damage. Many items that hoarders save are flammable. This compounds the damage and, as a result, the price to repair or save the building.

Hoarders must be aware of these risks and should take precautionary steps to avoid a disaster situation. If hoarding is something you cannot avoid, be sure to keep all flammable clutter away from electrical sockets or wires, any source of excessive heat, and any other potential fire-starters.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Haddon Heights/Voorhees will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

The Leading Cause of Home Fires in the Winter

2/26/2016 (Permalink)

Did you know that it doesn't matter what the weather is outside the leading cause of home fires is cooking?

Avoid Holiday Hazards

11/24/2015 (Permalink)

Just the facts:

  • More than half (56%) of home candle fires occur when something that can catch fire is too close to the candle.
  • December is the peak time for candle fires.  In December, 11% of home candle fires began with decorations, compared to 4% the rest of the year.
  • A heat source too close to the tree causes roughly 1 in 6 Christmas tree fires.
  • Be safe this holiday season:

  • Keep candles at least 12 inches away from anything that burns.
  • Use sturdy candle holders that are not likely to tip over and place candles on clear uncluttered surfaces. Consider using flameless candles instead of real candles.
  • Make sure your tree and decorations are at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, candles and heat vents.

How often should you check the batteries in your smoke detectors?

    5/15/2015 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms greatly reduce the risk of injury to those inside your home or business. Install them on every floor and check the batteries monthly.
