Understanding Mold

2/12/2019 (Permalink)

Mold can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any organic substance, as long as moisture and oxygen are present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, foods, and insulation. Molds reproduce by making spores that usually cannot be seen without magnification. Mold spores waft through the indoor and outdoor air continually. When mold spores land on a damp spot indoors, they may begin growing and digesting whatever they are growing on in order to survive. Molds gradually destroy the things they grow on. Bacteria can start to grow within hours and mold can start to grow within days. Mold spores can lay dormant for years until an ideal growing condition develops, in which they start to flourish. Especially during the summer, the warm humid conditions are a perfect microenvironment for mold growth. When excessive moisture accumulates in buildings or on building materials, mold growth will often occur—particularly if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed. It is impossible to eliminate all molds and mold spores in an indoor environment. However, mold growth can be controlled indoors by controlling the moisture. Many types of molds exist.

All molds can cause health effects.  Potential health concerns are an important reason to prevent mold growth and to remediate and clean any existing mold growth indoors.  The purpose of mold remediation is to remove the mold to prevent human exposure and damage to building materials and furnishings. It is necessary to clean up mold contamination, not just kill it. Dead mold is still allergenic, and some dead molds are still potentially toxic!

The appropriate restoration procedures within the first few hours of a water loss can save thousands of dollars in secondary damage. Before the growth of mold becomes visible, there will be a faint musty or earthy smell. In time, mold will appear on the outside of the wall as a stain or discoloration. In a standard situation, SERVPRO® Professionals examine the structure for any visible signs of mold and remove the mold growth and excess spores returning the area

back to normal levels. Some situations require the assistance of an Indoor Air Quality/Environmental Professional (IEP) with specialized equipment and services needed to assess and/or repair the structure. IEPs can test and clear a structure for mold

by collecting air and surface samples. Then they can determine whether the mold has been successfully decontaminated.

Please contact us if you suspect that you have a mold problem in your home or business.  We handle mold remediation work on a daily basis and know when prompt action is required to prevent further mold growth. In the event mold is found on a property.  If extensive mold growth is present, it may be recommended that occupants leave the affected area until the containment process is safely and successfully completed.

Summertime Conditions in Haddon Heights, Just Right For Mold Growth

7/14/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Summertime traditionally brings family trips, school vacations, as well as plenty of hot uncomfortable weather. Those sunny days, however, often come with high humidity and afternoon thundershowers — ideal conditions for annoying and potentially toxic mold.

Mold is a fungus that can grow anywhere moisture is present. Mold spores thrive in warm temperatures (77- 86 degrees F) and wherever there are damp conditions. Mold spores are in the air, and they can grow on any surface. In a house, mold can be found in ceilings and walls, under sinks, in drywall, hidden behind wallpaper or baseboards, in the ductwork or even on furniture and clothes. It can also grow outdoors under wood piles or mulch, gutters or abandoned trash. Mold in a house can lay dormant until it gets the needed heat and humidity to grow and multiply. For this reason, summer vacation is a great time for mold to thrive.

Here are three easy steps to help prevent mold when you go on vacation:

  • Check for areas where water could accumulate — such as around windows, doors, bathroom leaks, kitchen sinks and washing machines.
  • Clean surfaces of oil, soap, dust and dirt. Those materials are a feeding ground for mold when moisture is present.
  • Set the temperature inside the house in the low 70s, if possible. If you suspect humidity, set a dehumidifier to keep the moisture level below 60 percent. In your closet, place a hanging moisture absorber that will trap excess humidity and eliminate musty odors.

Follow These Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

Stay out of affected areas.

Turn off the HVAC system and fans.

Contact SERVPRO of [[Franchise Name]] for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

Don’t touch or disturb the mold.

Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.

Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.

Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Mold Prevention Tips

6/30/2017 (Permalink)

Mold is a nuisance that can occur in any home, especially during the hot and humid summer months. Here are 9 ways to help prevent harmful mold from growing inside your home.

  1. Locate any possible problem areas: Anywhere in your home where moisture may gather and sit for a period of time could be considered a problem area. These are the areas where mold thrives, so identify them.
  2. Dry wet areas immediately: Mold cannot grow without moisture. So, dry any and all areas previously determined to be problem areas as soon as possible to stop mold from growing.
  3. Prevent moisture with proper ventilation: Activities as simple as cooking dinner or taking a shower can promote mold growth without the proper ventilation. Make sure that all vents are working properly and even crack a window open from time to time.
  4. Use mold-resistant products when possible: When building a new home or renovation a new one, use mold-resistant drywall and mold inhibiting paints to slow the growth of mold.
  5. Keep an eye on your indoor humidity: The Environmental Protection Agency recommends keeping your indoor humidity between 30 and 60 percent. If you notice condensation on any pipes or windows inside your home, dry the area and address the source of the humidity.
  6. Direct Water away from your home: Ensure that the ground around the foundation of your home slopes away so that water does not collect around the base and seem into the home.
  7. Clean or repair roof gutters: Mold could potentially be coming from a leaky roof spurred by full or damaged gutters. Clean them and be aware of any water stains that might be the result of a flaw.
  8. Improve air flow in your home: Open doors between rooms and move furniture away from walls. Cold air cannot hold as much moisture and that moisture may collect on walls or other surfaces. If air is moving it becomes more difficult.
  9. Keep mold off household plants: Moist soil in household plants is a perfect place for mold to grow. Add Taheebo tea to any water you use to water your plants. This oil resists mold even in rainforests.

Common Misconceptions about Cleaning Mold

6/29/2017 (Permalink)

Mold and mildew cleanups can be a costly job. Many people feel that the cost to properly remove mold and mildew is too high to hire somebody else, so they take it upon themselves to remove it. While it is true that mold removal specialists can be more costly than a homemade remedy in the short term, it is important to remember that professionals can remove the mold and ensure that it remains removed. The long term benefits of professional mold removal by SERVPRO® of Haddon Heights/Vorhees could end up saving you a significant amount of money and headaches (literally!).

However, if you are still inclined to try removing mold on your own, here are some things to avoid when doing so.

  1. Seeing isn’t always believing: Just because you can’t see the mold anymore does not mean it isn’t there. Mold is often microscopic, and therefore capable of growing again in the exact same spot you just cleaned and even spreading farther around the building.
  2. Bleach be gone! (maybe not): While bleach is a powerful cleaner and largely effective tool when it comes to mold removal, it cannot do it all. Use an antibacterial cleanser to perform a mop up in order to maximize bleach’s effectiveness.
  3. Out of sight, out of mind : Painting over a mold spot with mold resistant paint does not have any effect on the mold itself. All it does is provide a cover for the mold, much like sweeping dirt under the carpet. Sure, it will look better, but the mold will still have adverse health effects on you.
  4. Dress appropriately: Mold spores can be released by the slightest touch so be sure to wear protective clothing including gloves, protective layers, and a respirator.
