As a census-designated place (CDP) and unincorporated community, you will find Voorhees in the Franklin Township portion of Somerset County in New Jersey. History and Beginnings of Voorhees, New Jersey

This community got named after Governor Foster McGowan Voorhees. He granted a petition so that Voorhees could become separated as a township on March 3, 1899. The name itself can be broken down as such: "voor" is a Dutch prefix with the meaning "in front of." The "hees" portion is from a village called Hees by the area of Ruinen, Drenthe in Holland.

The first of the residents of Voorhees was Lenni-Lanape, which is from Lenape Nation. These were Algonquian people that migrated from the North Country into New Jersey via the Mississippi River. Although the exact date of the Lenape Nation is not clear, there is evidence showing that people did inhabit New Jersey up to 10,000 years ago. The Algonquian tribes referred to the Lenape Nation by many names, including "Men of Men," "Grandfather," and the "Original People." There were roughly 2,000 people from the Lenni-Lenape that lived in the Voorhees area, yet there were lots of neighboring tribes that liked to visit New Jersey for fishing, hunting, and growing on the rich soil.

These people were generally nomadic, often raising crops that included beans, pumpkin, and corn. They would hike to the Atlantic Ocean during the warmer months and stay there while collecting fish, clams, oysters, crabs, and shells. A popular route traveled during this venture was called the "Long-a-Coming Road," which is now known as Route 561 in Voorhees, aka Haddonfield-Berlin Road.

Voorhees, New Jersey in the 1600s

Throughout the early portion of the 1600s, people from Southeastern Delaware, known as the Nanticoke People, began to migrate north, united with the Lenni-Lenape people who were already residing in New Jersey. There was once a small Osage tribe that was living between Ashland and Kirkwood, but they were essentially part of the Midwestern Sioux people. In Voorhees, there is an area and train station that was named for them, as is the Somerdale Road Osage School.

There were also Swedes that settled throughout Delaware Valley in the 1600s. Many years were filled with fighting with Dutch over control within New Jersey. In 1655, the Dutch took control, and England conquered the territory in 1664. At this time, New Jersey got established as a British colony. The area now known as Voorhees was part of the County of Gloucester's Waterford Woodlynne in 1695. 

In 1844, the County of Camden was created, which housed Waterford Township and the community of Voorhees. During the 1800s, Voorhees was sparsely populated and mainly a farming community. Once roads got added, the neighborhood communities grew substantially. With the railroad's installation, more communities sprouted all around the three major stations: Kirkwood, Osage, and Ashland. 

Even though Voorhees was initially founded in 1899, it took about a century to establish its identity fully. Much of this had to do with whoever was delivering mail at the time. During the early days, every section of Voorhees had a post office that was located within the general store. Until the time that the first post office was opened in 1985, Kirkwood residents would still get their mail from a small post office located on White Horse Road.
